Just a short time in the Old Quarter will have you distinguishing a temple or community house from a tube house or more French-influenced construction such as Ngoc Son Temple -The lively Hang Be Market – the Historic House on Ma May Street.
ITINERARY OF HA NOI HALF DAY WALKING TOUR
13h30: meeting point at No 7 Dinh Tien Hoang, the north-shore of Hoan Kiem Lake where we start our lovely walk tour into the old quarter of Hanoi. First we stop to visit Ngoc Son Temple – the temple located on an island at north end of Hoan Kiem Lake connected to the mainland by The Huc (Rising Sun) bridge. The bridge was constructed in classical Vietnamese style lined with flags. Ngoc Son temple, a famous tour attraction, is surrounded by water and shaded by trees which dedicated to General Tran Hung Dao (who defeated the Mongols in 13th century), La To (patron saint of physicians) and scholar Van Xuong.
After that we will walk a short distance to the lively Hang Be Market – one of the densest markets in Hanoi, where things are available year round. Then we will continue the tour to the Historic House on Ma May Street, an interesting attraction for culture. The house was built at the end of the 19th century and restored in 1999 to preserve the ancient architecture and lifestyle of Hanoians as the way it was.
After visiting the house, we will wander along the busy streets, passing stores and street stands selling their wares. You may find some exciting things for yourself and relatives at streets here. Stop at Hang Quat Street, where we have chance to see and order the stamp maker. The walking tour will continue to the largest St. Joseph’s Cathedral which was built by the French in 1887. The cathedral is located in Nha Chung street where now becomes ‘lemon tea’ street, a popular place for the young in Hanoi. The tour ended up at a cafe overlooking Hoan Kiem Lake where we will have a chance to relax and reflect all that we have seen today.
